Happy July, Summerville! We hope you all had an amazing Independence Day with your loved ones celebrating our Country’s freedom and those who protect it. For those of you who may not know, Dr. Corella is a proud veteran and a proud supporter of our community. Which is why we are so excited to talk about an exciting event happening in Summerville in just a few days – Walk For The Fallen 2019.
This incredible event is celebrating its 6th year of honoring those currently in service, those who have returned home, and those who were lost in the line of fire. Walking from Summerville to Mount Pleasant in their memory – that’s over 30 Miles!
This event was started by Navy Veteran and Summerville local Dwight Decker. Decker, owner of Black Force MMA Fitness Academy and CEO of the nonprofit Grappling PTSD, was in the Navy for 5 years, 10 Months, and 30 days. After returning home and facing his own health issues he decided that he wanted to do more for his community, raise awareness, and honor his brothers and sisters in service. That’s when the idea of Walk for The Fallen was born.
When Decker decided to walk the 30 miles between Summerville and Mount Pleasant, he shared his intentions with a handful of people. That first year in 2013, 8 people joined him on his walk and they had one escort vehicle. Five years later that number jumped to 100 people with multiple escorts. This year Decker predicts that over 100 people will be joining him to make the journey.
While he makes the trip, Decker carries an “Honor Cloth” that bears the names of past and present service members on it. Both who are still alive and those who paved the way towards freedom. At the end of the walk, he reads the names of everyone on the cloth during the closing ceremony – a powerful and beautiful tribute.
The event starts at 3AM on July 20th. Walkers will meet at Black Force MMA and begin their trip from there.
