Memorial Day is a day we, as a nation, use to honor those lost in military service.
The beginnings of Memorial Day started in 1868. Originally recognized as Decoration Day, It was not until 1882 when the holiday made the transition to it's known title. The title, "Decoration Day" came from the act of many civilians and grievers coming together to place flowers on graves of those lost in the Civil War. The decoration of the graves was seen as an act of remembrance and respect. The act spread through the South and eventually made it's way to the North where the discussion about making it a Federal Holiday began. In 1967, that was achieved along with the notion that the holiday encompassed the recognition of all wars and all lost.
Sadly, in recent years it has been made into a holiday glamorized as a three day weekend. To the younger generations, just a day out of school. The reason for Memorial Day is to remember and thank those who lost their lives while fighting for this country. We must continue to educate others on the meaning of this day.
So, as you enjoy Memorial Day, please remember the true meaning of the holiday and take time with your family to remember those who have lost their lives defending our freedom.
