Trick or Treat: Tips for your Teeth
As Halloween approaches later this month, we want to make sure your teeth are ready for the treats and even the tricks! Here are just a few ways to keep your teeth healthy while still enjoying the candy cultivated holiday.
Eat Sweets with Meals
When your mother says to not eat sweets before a meal, she knows what she’s talking about! It is better to eat sweets either with a meal or shortly after, but why? The reason is saliva production. Meals help stimulate saliva production in the mouth which assists in the washing away of harmful sugar and acid that may be in those sweet treats you got from the neighbors.
Similar to the way saliva washes away harmful sugars, water can refresh your mouth after indulging in any form of sugary sweet. As you can tell, the point is to not have the sugary substance stay on your teeth or around your gums for any extended amount of time.
Clean your Teeth after the Treat
After you have had your meal, after you have had your sweet treat, and after you drink your water, follow it up by brushing and flossing your teeth very well. This is imperative to making sure no residue from the candy or sweets have stayed on your teeth. If these particles are not removed they have the tendency to cause cavities and further damage to your teeth and gums
