We know the last thing on your mind when you are feeling under the weather is getting up to brush your teeth. Taking care of your body while your sick should be your top priority. Yet we stop taking care of our mouths when we are sick. Here are some ways you can keep your mouth healthy while you’re sick.
When you’re sick getting the right fluids is important. As always water is the best choice, but sometimes we want something other than water. Drinking sports drinks is okay in moderation. We would highly suggest drinking the sugar free sports drinks if you feel you must drink them, since sugar is not good for your teeth or your immune system. If you want something warm tea is a great option. Keep in mind that sugar is still not advised and try not to add any lemon since it is acidic and bad for your teeth enamel.
Sickness often induces the unfortunate side effect of vomiting. Certainly, an unpleasant scenario that leaves a horrible taste in your mouth. That distinct and unpleasant taste is stomach acid that has made its way up from the stomach. Stomach acid is not good to leave sitting on your teeth, so you might be tempted to brush your teeth to get it off. Do not do this, it will have the reverse effect. We don’t want to brush that acid all over our teeth. It is better to wait to brush and just rinse your mouth with water or a water solution with baking soda.
Finally, brushing your teeth can make you feel better. Just having a that clean feeling in your mouth can help improve you overall feeling while you’re sick. It is hard for you to reinfect yourself with your own toothbrush after you get over your sickness. Though it can never hurt to get yourself a new toothbrush.
