Here at Progressive Family Dentistry, we want to combat the thought that the dentist is mean or scary!
In the eyes of children, everything is much bigger and more frightening. The thought of traveling somewhere where a person will look around in their mouth has the potential to cause a lot of anxiety. But what if we change that narrative? Children are curious creatures, and are learning constantly. If we take that into consideration and begin their relationship with the dentist positively, there is a good chance their anxious feelings will ease! When a child visits the dentist for the first time, it is less about their teeth and more about building a trusting relationship with their dentist! To make it better, why not let the dentist use your mouth as an example of how a cleaning would look? Kids love to watch us and learn from us. If you as their parent are comfortable while the dentist or dental hygienist acts out a cleaning, then they can do it too! After your child has gotten comfortable with the idea of a dentist as a friend, the dentist will check your child’s teeth, gums, and oral issues and schedule an appointment for a later date. If your child has dentist anxiety, or is in need of a regular dentist, make an appointment today!
