Fluoride: What Is It?
How many times have you gone to the dentist and heard about fluoride, but never really knew what it was? Today, we will be discussing fluoride, what it is, what it does, and why it’s important to your dental health. Not many people know that fluoride is a natural substance that is found in nature through water, soil, and some food. Even in these forms, fluoride helps decrease the possibility for tooth decay. Since tooth decay is arguable the most common health problem afflicting children and adults alike, the effort to increase fluoride exposure began years ago.
Fluoride is used throughout the dental profession with hopes to benefit the life of one’s teeth. Some uses are in toothpaste, varnishes, fillings, and even special brands of floss! Statistically, fluoride has the potential to reduce tooth decay by 20 to 40 percent, which has safely protected children from cavities for years. It helps prevent tooth decay multiple ways, including changing the structure of enamel in children younger than 7 to increase resistance to acid, and also reducing the ability for bacteria to produce acid that harms the tooth.
